The upcoming film Materialists has quickly become one of the most talked-about projects in the entertainment industry. Directed by Celine Song, the visionary behind the critically acclaimed Past Lives, this new project marks a shift into the world of romantic comedy with a star-studded cast. If you are looking for information regarding the plot, the release date, and where to find the latest updates, this guide covers everything you need to know about this highly anticipated production.
What is Materialists About?
Materialists is described as a sharp, sophisticated romantic comedy set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City. The story follows a professional, high-end matchmaker who finds herself entangled in a complicated love triangle. While her job is to help the wealthy find their perfect partners, her own romantic life becomes the center of the narrative as she navigates feelings for two very different men.
The film is expected to explore themes of modern love, social status, and the transactional nature of relationships in a high-stakes urban environment. Unlike traditional romantic comedies that rely on slapstick humor, Materialists is anticipated to offer the same emotional depth and intellectual curiosity that Celine Song brought to her directorial debut. Fans of character-driven stories will find plenty to look forward to in this exploration of human connection.
Meet the Star-Studded Cast
One of the primary reasons for the massive buzz surrounding the film is its incredible lead cast. The production has secured three of the most popular actors in Hollywood today to bring this story to life.
Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson takes the lead role as the professional matchmaker at the heart of the story. Known for her versatile performances in both independent dramas and major franchises, Johnson is expected to bring a blend of wit and vulnerability to the character. Her ability to anchor complex emotional narratives makes her an ideal fit for a Celine Song project.
Chris Evans
Chris Evans joins the cast in a role that allows him to return to his roots in contemporary drama and comedy. While many know him for his work in blockbuster superhero films, Evans has a long history of delivering charming and nuanced performances in smaller, character-focused movies. His involvement adds a layer of leading-man charisma to the film’s central conflict.
Pedro Pascal
Rounding out the lead trio is Pedro Pascal, whose meteoric rise in recent years has made him one of the most sought-after actors in the industry. Pascal’s range allows him to play characters that are both intimidating and deeply sympathetic. In Materialists, his presence is expected to provide a compelling counterpoint to Evans, creating a dynamic love triangle that will keep audiences guessing.
The Vision of Celine Song
Director Celine Song made a significant impact on the film world with her debut feature, Past Lives, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. With Materialists, she is moving into a slightly different genre but maintaining her focus on the complexities of the human heart.
Song has described the film as a “rowdy” romantic comedy, suggesting a higher energy level than her previous work. However, industry insiders expect the film to retain her signature style: long takes, meaningful silence, and a deep focus on the geography of the characters’ emotions. By working with A24, the studio known for supporting unique directorial voices, Song has the creative freedom to reinvent the romantic comedy for a modern audience.
Release Date and Production Status
As of late 2024, Materialists has completed principal photography. Filming took place on location in New York City, with many fans capturing glimpses of the lead actors on the streets of Manhattan. Because the film is currently in the post-production phase, an official release date has not yet been finalized.

- Film Festivals: There is high speculation that the movie will premiere at a major festival, such as Sundance, Cannes, or TIFF, before its wide theatrical release.

Where to Find the Materialists Trailer
Currently, an official full-length trailer for Materialists has not been released to the general public. Because the film is in post-production, the marketing campaign is expected to begin a few months before the release date. To be among the first to see the trailer, you should keep an eye on the following sources:
- Official Studio Channels: A24 typically releases trailers on their official YouTube channel and social media accounts.
- Entertainment News Outlets: Major trade publications often debut exclusive stills and teaser clips.
- Social Media: Following the lead actors on platforms like Instagram can often provide behind-the-scenes looks and early announcements regarding trailer drops.
Why the Buzz is Growing
The excitement for Materialists isn’t just about the famous faces on screen. It represents a growing trend of “prestige” romantic comedies—films that take the genre seriously while still providing the entertainment and escapism audiences crave. The combination of an Oscar-nominated director, a powerhouse studio like A24, and a trio of A-list actors makes this a rare cinematic event.
Furthermore, the New York City setting plays a character of its own. The film captures the specific energy of the city’s elite social circles, providing a visual feast for viewers who enjoy urban storytelling. The contrast between the cold, transactional nature of matchmaking and the warmth of genuine romance is expected to be a major highlight of the viewing experience.
