How to Set Up and Use iClicker

Student response systems have become a staple in modern classrooms, allowing instructors to engage with students in real-time. One of the most popular tools used today is iClicker. Whether you are using a physical remote or the mobile application, setting up your account correctly is essential for ensuring your participation and grades are recorded accurately. This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough on how to register your device, join your courses, and troubleshoot common issues so you can focus on your studies.

Understanding the iClicker System

iClicker is a technology platform designed to facilitate active learning. It allows instructors to ask questions during a lecture and receive instant feedback from the entire class. This data helps professors understand if the material is being grasped or if further explanation is needed. For students, it often serves as a tool for attendance, participation points, and even low-stakes quizzes.

There are two primary ways to participate: using a physical iClicker remote or using the iClicker Student app (formerly known as REEF) on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Your instructor will typically specify which method is required for their specific course. Some classes allow both, while others may strictly require one or the other.

How to Create Your Student Account

Before you can participate in any polls or quizzes, you must have a registered account. Even if you are using a physical remote, creating an online account is often necessary to link your device ID to your name in the instructor’s gradebook. Follow these steps to get started.

Step 1: Download the App or Visit the Website

If you plan to use your mobile device, download the iClicker Student app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. If you prefer using a computer or simply need to register a physical remote, visit the official student web portal. Ensure you are using a supported browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for the best experience.

Step 2: Sign Up for an Account

Click on the “Sign Up” or “Create Account” button. You will be prompted to find your institution. It is vital that you select the correct campus, as many universities have multiple locations. Once selected, enter your personal information, including your first name, last name, and email address.

Step 3: Use Your School Email

Always use your official university-issued email address when signing up. Instructors sync their rosters using these email addresses. Using a personal Gmail or Yahoo account may result in your points not being uploaded to your official course gradebook, which can be difficult to correct later in the semester.

Step 4: Enter Your Student ID

Most institutions require you to enter a specific Student ID. This is usually the ID number found on your campus card or the username you use to log into your school’s learning management system (like Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle). Double-check this number for accuracy, as it is the primary link between your responses and your grades.

Registering a Physical iClicker Remote

If your course requires a physical remote, you must link that specific hardware to your account. This ensures that when you press a button in class, the system knows the signal is coming from you. You can register your remote through the student app or the web portal.

Locating Your Remote ID

Every iClicker remote has a unique eight-character ID located on the back of the device. This ID is a combination of letters and numbers. If the ID has worn off due to use, you can usually find it inside the battery compartment or by turning the remote on; some models will flash the ID on the small LCD screen upon startup.

Linking the Remote to Your Profile

Once you have logged into your account, navigate to the “Profile” or “Remote Registration” section. Enter your eight-character Remote ID and click “Save.” You can register multiple remotes if you happen to lose one or need a backup, but only one should be active at a time during a live session.

Joining Your Courses

Creating an account does not automatically put you in your instructor’s class. You must manually search for and add each course you are enrolled in. This process only needs to be done once at the beginning of the term.

Searching for Your Class

In the app or web portal, click the “+” icon or the “Add a Course” button. Search for your instructor’s name or the specific course name (e.g., “Biology 101”). Be careful to select the correct section number, as instructors often teach multiple sections of the same course throughout the day.

Confirming Enrollment

Once you find the correct course, click on it to add it to your list. Some instructors may protect their courses with a password or require you to be within a certain geographic range (GPS) to join. If a password is required, your instructor will provide it during the first week of class or in the syllabus.

Participating in Class Sessions

When it is time for class, the process of participating is straightforward. If you are using the app, you will need an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data). If you are using a remote, you simply need to be within range of the instructor’s base station.

Checking In

Many instructors use a “Check-in” feature to take attendance. If using the app, you may need to allow the app to access your location to prove you are physically in the classroom. Open the app as class begins and tap the “Join” button when the session becomes active.

Answering Questions

When a question is posed, your screen (or remote) will allow you to select an answer. For multiple-choice questions, simply press A, B, C, D, or E. For short answer or numeric questions, you will type your response into the app. You will usually see a confirmation on your device, such as a green checkmark or a “Sent” message, indicating your response was received.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Technology can sometimes be unpredictable. If you encounter issues during a session, try these common fixes before contacting your instructor.

  • Check Your Connection: If the app isn’t loading, toggle your Wi-Fi off and back on, or switch to cellular data. Classroom Wi-Fi can often become congested when hundreds of students connect at once.
  • Replace Remote Batteries: Physical remotes require AAA batteries. If the lights are dim or the remote won’t turn on, fresh batteries usually solve the problem. Always keep a spare set in your backpack.
  • Frequency Code: In large buildings, multiple instructors might be using iClickers at the same time. You may need to change the frequency of your remote to match your instructor’s base. Your instructor will display the two-letter frequency code (e.g., AA or BB) at the start of class. To change it, hold the Power button until the light flashes, then enter the two-letter code.
  • Syncing Grades: If you don’t see your points in the app, give it 24 hours. Instructors often have to manually sync the iClicker cloud with the school’s gradebook.

Best Practices for Success

To ensure you never miss out on participation points, make it a habit to check your account regularly. Verify that your responses are being recorded after the first few classes. If you see zeros in your gradebook despite participating, speak with your instructor or a campus IT representative immediately to ensure your Student ID and Remote ID are entered correctly.

Additionally, always bring your device to every class session. It is helpful to set a reminder on your phone or keep your physical remote in the same pocket of your bag so it is never left behind in a dorm room or apartment. By staying organized and ensuring your technology is ready to go, you can make the most of your classroom experience and boost your academic performance.
